HM Submarine E36 along with HM Submarine E43 left Harwich during the morning of 19th January, 1917 to patrol along the Dutch coast. That evening, when they had reached their destination,  the two submarines collided. Having lost visual contact HM Sub E43 suddenly sighted HM Sub E36, barely 50 yards off and directly in her path. Avoiding action was taken but to no avail. HM Sub E43 struck HM Sub E36 and rode right over her causing her to sink, never to be seen again. All of her crew were lost, including Charles Harrington.
